Miriam Valverde

Literacy Specialist and certified K-5 teacher

Literacy is a gift.

Your commitment to your children’s education is honorable and incredibly loving. As the world of education has evolved, the ways that children learn have, in many ways, stayed the same. As a literacy coach and professional educator, I aspire to provide Tampa families with personalized, high-quality instruction for their young learners.

ABOUT ME

Above all else, I live to serve children and their families in the best way I know how: by sharing the gift of literacy. I have the experience and professional expertise to provide high-impact reading instruction to children in all types of environments and with all types of needs.

I am proud to bring meaningful learning into the home, by: enhancing their current homeschool/school curriculum, bridging learning gaps, and cultivating confidence in young readers.

I choose a nontraditional teaching path so that I can have the autonomy to make instructional decisions that I know are best for children as individuals. I am able to do more of what I love: build personal and collaborative relationships with parents by sharing the same vision for their child.

lEARNING &

cURRICULUM

Research shows that one commercial curriculum will not meet the needs of all learners. Rather, I administer a skill inventory with each child. Then, I use evidence-based practices based on the science of reading to build on their strengths and bridge learning gaps:

  • Sound to Print alphabetic learning
  • scope and sequence based on the science of reading
  • explicit and systematic grapheme/phoneme/morpheme instruction based on the Orton-Gillingham approach
  • orthographic/sound mapping
  • metacognition & reflective reading
  • semantic/concept mapping
  • pronoun & referent linking
  • text annotation to promote active reading

According to Nancy Young’s Ladder of Reading and Writing, learning to read seems effortless for 5-10% of children. A broad range of methods (including balanced literacy) will teach about 35% of children to read. But for approximately 40% of students, learning to read requires code-based, systematic, and explicit instruction – i.e. structured literacy.

What they say:

Ms. Miriam is THE BEST. She is so patient with the kids . The lessons are always so fun and engaging. My daughter can’t wait for reading class every week ! I’m already seeing improvements and increased eagerness to learn in my daughter since starting with her. I cannot recommend her enough !!

-Bridget, homeschooling & co-op mom

Miriam has provided very helpful insight and support to me as a homeschooling parent. My daughter was a reluctant writer and has flourished with her recommendations. She really took the time to listen and understand where I felt we struggled, and provide recommendations that appealed to my childs learning style. Thank you!!!

-Jennifer, homeschooling mother of 2

Miriam is a fantastic tutor. Every week my daughter is looking forward to her session . She is thrilled to learn , talk ,and have fun. She is excited about learning with the one on one Miriam offers. I am full of anticipation to see what the future holds with her learning and grades.

-Jen, mother of 1st grader (and 2 more!)

Miriam is an incredible tutor. Our self conscious 8 year old struggles with reading. Since going to Miriam, her self esteem has grown tremendously. Miriam is kind and patient. My daughter has now shown interest in books and we couldn't be happier. We highly recommend her. Looking for someone affordable that'll work with your schedule, Miriam is your girl! We will continue using her services . Thank you Miriam for all that you do!
